No, but I am sure he did not say you cannot get updates anymore.
The reason you have to switch to IE when going to the update site is that it
searches your pc to see what if any new updates are needed and also runs the
authentication process to verify you run a legit copy of windows.
I never use IE unless it is to go to a microsoft side and have always used
firefox all other times. Getting auto updates works fine, regardless of
which browser you usually use..
