Hi Maria,
I am sure that you have a certain rationale for deciding to get a CD
changer. Can I ask why you would prefer a large changer rather than
'digitize' the entire collection?
Personally, I would buy a cheap 1 TB external USB drive and just rip all of
the CDs to disk with Windows Media Player. Large 1 TB disks are now less
than $100. I prefer to rip to a high quality MP3 format. That way it can
be played on any device. Yes, it will take some time to rip 400 CDs. But,
the process takes little user intervention. Most of the time you don't even
have to pay attention to determine the title or contents of the CD. I would
do this task in the background as I did other things that do not hog
resources. Perhaps while reading mail. It becomes like an assembly line.
Just swap in a new CD.
There are endless advantages to converting CDs to a MP3 library. Possibly
the biggest is having a digital backup. Actually, with a valuable
collection, I would make multiple copies. It would certainly solve your
current problem, because all of the information would be instantly available
in the Media Library. Once in the Library songs can be searched for and
categorized in many ways. The songs would all be instantly available.
Does the CD changer come with any special software to work with Windows
Media Player, Winamp or iTunes? I really do not see how this device would
be useful without such software that automatically does what you are
requesting. Ideally, it's software should work with the player software to
make the player think all of the songs are available all of the time and
know when to switch CDs. This device will also require some time to 'mount'
the desired CD, start playing the track and will take longer to retrieve the
song data while playing. Does this changer 'mount' more than one CD at a
time? How long would it take to switch from a song on one CD to a song on a
different CD? This will occur all of the time in a typical playlist.
Changers are also susceptible to hardware failures since they have more
moving parts.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Compiling a play list
I'm setting up a 400-CD changer.
I want to compile a list of songs on each CD without having to type out
the title of each song.
How can I do this with Winamp or Windows Media or whatever?
I know I'm lazy but I'm confident that one of you very smart people will
let me know how to do it.
Thank you in advance of course.
