On my ADSL connection this side, the settings are in fact:
gateway=192.168.1.254
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
and the IP address for my machine is:
192.168.1.100
FWIW, and not really relevant, but IP addresses starting with 192.168 are in
fact virtual/unused ranges in the real outer internet world, and that's why
they can be used like this.
Also, if you just set my TCPIP settings to dynamically obtain an IP address
it should set most of these automatically since it'll find the router and
that'll tell it the rest, but that's rather dependant on your type of
connection/hardware.

That's usually:
255.255.255.0
But it could vary if you have a real unusual router or isp if you're not
behind a router.
