There is no longer a link for Preferences on Google. Instead it is called
Search Settings. The page that opens is easy to navigate by headings. I
usually just go to the heading for Number of results. I like 50 results
since I don't like having to going to lots of pages and getting my bearings
each time. I also like each result to open in a new window which is the next
topic in that heading.
Be sure to save your settings.
For some reason these settings become erased now and then and I have to go
back to reset them.

Like, number of hits per page etc.
The "preferences" used to be on the first page.
Now, it, along with just about anything else useful, ain't there.
