Speculating really but the fact that the wav conversion is ok seems to indicate some kind of resources issue with the mp3 creation. The documentation for Text Aloud does warn that not all systems will tolerate the highest conversion rates. I would experiment with reducing the conversion rate in the settings under voice and file options. You need to press control tab to move from voice options to file options to adjust the conversion rate.
By the way the email support for text aloud from Ken White at Next Up is in my experience very good. This may not be available if you have the free version given out by giveaway of the day. I get this error: TextAloud graphic 508 A disk error occurred during a write operation. OK when the file is being finnished. I have more than enough memory on my hard disk, so what could be the problem? And yes, it seams that this error doesn't happen when the file output is the waf format... So what to do? Thanks!
