I upload mine using MMS messages from my cellphone - not 100% relevant, but
anyway.
Not exactly sure how got it configured as such anymore, but my facebook
login is my phone number anyway FWIW.

I use the light version of this site (light.facebook.com). I tried to
upload a photo of myself, in JPG format, and I got an "unknown error, no
error", followed by a "close" button. How do I upload a photo? Does it
have to be in a different format?
