I never use the "safely remove hardware" option. I just make sure that no data is being transferred and then I just pullout the flash drive or device. I have done this hundreds of times over many years and never had a problem. The one thing I notice is that when doing this while using MS Word, it does leave a temp file that begins with ~. These files collect over time, but you can just delete them.
