On my family's computer, a Dell Inspirion 518 desktop running Windows 7 Home Priemium, the screen goes black occasionally when starting or waking up from a screen saver. The screen saver settings are the defaults where it returns to the login screen when waking up. I have had to "fix" this several times. It causes the screen resolution to change to a value that is not supported by the hardware. I set the resolution to the fourth most highest, 1280 x 1024, and it will work for a day or two.
Windows Update had an optional update of the video driver just before this happened. However, the computer had been running Windows 7 for only about a week before this happened, so perhaps this was not entirely the problem. I deleted this driver from the Device Manager and Installed a driver I downloaded from Dell. It turns out that Dell does not have a driver specific for Windows 7, so I downloaded the Vista version. The computer works fine until, except sometimes it will not display the login screen. What is the screen resolution on the login screen? How can I set it? Can I lock the resolution?
