They're meant to represent a form of facial expression, and you can add jaws

dictionary entries for them if you know what they are:

There's a hell of a lot of them referred to on that page, so you might want 
to search for specific ones after it loads...<smile>

Also, just possible you'll need to do something like hit enter on a link for

a specific category to get it to display the right set of acronyms.
