I believe the maximum length for a file name is 256 characters.

I cannot believe I do not know this, but I received an error message the
other day when I tried to save a file with a rather long file name!
Can some kind person tell me, in Windows XP, how many characters a file
name can be?
And while you are at it, with this question in mind, is there any
difference with XP, Vista, or Windows 7?
