I use to have a gateway system too, I ate at that keyboard too. No, it did
not die...I donated it to a non-profit organization so someone could have a
computer when I bought this one..
Oh my computer woes of late if it was only the stray pretzel, I could live
with that..
Now I don't drink at the keyboard, well not anymore,lol. I didn't spill
either, but just don't want to push my luck..
I didn't push the button the other guy said was on his keyboard too, the
tray that sits under the desk that pulls out for the keyboard did it when I
was looking for the pretzel, that's my story and sticking to it..

If this is the original keyboard that came with your HP, I wouldn't try
reassigning any of those keys. Alternatively, I suggest either masking
them or trying to ignore them. On my HP , there is a "Mute" which
turns off all sound from the sound card. That is a toggle switch so if
you hit it again, it will turn the sound back on again. I'm not sure
that was the key you hit but it sounds like it.
Mark has an excellent idea with the flexible keyboard cover. But it
does take some getting used to and you have to get one that has the same
format as your keyboard. That isn't as easy as it sounds.
Finally, there are few things which are more damaging or deadly to these
modern keyboards than crumbs and salt. Salt can and often will react
with the tiny metal contacts and render the keyboard inoperative,
eventually. I guess the problem begs one essential question, Patricia.
Which is more important to you, your computer or your snacks?

Seriously, you have to be more careful or you will definitely end up
buying another keyboard very shortly.
There are tiny contacts in these boards which would stop work entirely
because of one single pretzel crumb. No Patricia, I'm not kidding.
Getting food or Heaven forbid liquid onto one of our keyboards would
result in me having to chastise one of our employees.

Hi Patricia,
You might try reassigning the key under JAWS. Its worth a try any
way.
What I would really suggest is buying a flexible keyboard cover.
One just leaves it on the keyboard and types right through it. It
protects against crumbs, and beverages being spilt on the keyboard. I
use a cover like this all the time.
