You need to sort of tell them to use a different synth, and I don't always go for it since it does sometimes seem to make them a bit less stable - my 2c worth anyway.

Anyway, in NVDA, on the preferences menu, I think you first need to choose the synthesizers item and make changes there, and in jaws I think it's to do with the options, voices, voice adjustment, where you save a profile as a new one and then make changes to it, including synthesizer.
