There are 2 ways to open the configuration manager. 1. First way; Press Insert+ 6 on the #row.
2. Second way; Press Insert+F2, arrow down to configuration manager and press enter. You now have the configuration manager opened. Now press, ctrl+shift+D= the default jaws configuration manager 3. Now, press, Alt+S= open set options menu. 4. When the set options menu opens you will be on the first option which is user options. Press the enter-key to open user options. 5. Tab 2 times and here you can make your choice of key echo, typing echo characters, word, words&characters, or, none. you do this by highlighting with the arrow keys. 6. Now that you have the typing echo characters check box selected, tab to okay and press the spacebar or, the enter-key to close. 7. Press Alt + F4 to close and Jaws will ask you if you want to save your changes. Choose yes and press enter. Now, Jaws should only echo characters as you type. hope this helps. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kimsan" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, April 28, 2010 11:19 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] jaws echoing characters problems Hi, A bit of a brain freeze this morning but how do I set the default jcf to read character by character? Would I list the jaws managers, click configuration, alt S and then text processing? Sorry, it's the middle of the week and I am feeling um...? -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of David Sent: Tuesday, April 27, 2010 1:42 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] jaws echoing characters problems hello there; do you have jaws set up to read characters in the default jaws configuration manager? if this is so, then? jaws should read characters whether your in, word, notepad, WordPad etc. then there would be no need to use, insert+2 unless, you wanted to change on the fly, for that, specific session of using jaws. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kimsan" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, April 27, 2010 2:07 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] jaws echoing characters problems Hi David: Yes it does read the options and since we were using word at the time, it wasn't working there. When my student was trying to rename an ICON it wasn't doing that either. Thanks. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of David Goldfield Sent: Tuesday, April 27, 2010 10:05 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] jaws echoing characters problems Hi. Could you answer a few questions for me which may help me to figure this out. You say that pressing the JAWS key and 2 doesn't echo characters as it should. When you press this key does JAWS read the options correctly, such as characters, words, none, etc. If yes, does this problem happen in all programs? Which program were you in when your student was trying this: Microsoft Word? I have started working with a new student here at workwith learning jaws. Here's the problem. He did not like it, that it did not speak the characters, so I informed him to press the jaws key and the number row 2 and he will eventually have it set on characters. (I'm paraphrasing of course) so after having it set on characters, it did not echo characters. I have checked the verbosity and start up and they are both set on characters. What should I do?
