[Blind-Computing] settings for student word and other questions

Hi,

Recently I purchased the student Word program and am having trouble with it.
1 are there settings which would make it easier to operate, where could I find such suggestions? 


2 when I try to open files made in word pad, this program tries to open them 
and is very slow at it; is there some way to turn this student Word program 
off when I am working in Word Pad?


Thanks for any help and for any direction to a tutorial on this program.

I am using XP, and Jaws 11.
