Hello group: I just downloaded the latest version of Jaws 11. Before doing so, I spoke to Technical Support at Freedom Scientific. Nikki told me that a lot of work had gone into this latest build and much of it was on the way Jaws and Windows Live work together. Well, I'm not from Missouri but I do like people to show me so I reactivated Live Mail. People, it's a whole new world! The two programs work extremely well together now.
LIVE MAIL CONTACTS LIST: For those of you who are transferring from Outlook Express to Windows Live Mail, I found a trick which works quite well. While in Outlook Express, go to Export. One of the options should allow you to send the contact list to a file with the extension .WAB and Windows Live Mail recognizes that kind of file. I suggest putting it on your desktop for ease of location. 1. Open the Windows Live program and locate Import in the file option. 2. Open the Import option. 3. Type the name of the file you have suggested in the field provided and allow Live Mail to open it. All of your contacts will be brought into the list just as they appear in Outlook Express. WINDOWS LIVE MESSAGE PANE: This probably looks good on the screen but it causes some problems for Jaws. In the View menu, locate that option and turn it off. You'll find that jaws works much better without that Reading Pane active. SENDING MESSAGES: Windows Live Mail will also complete an address once you start typing it but it is done a bit differently. It will take some getting used to. Just start typing the name, providing enough characters to make your entry unique. if you tab forward and then tab back, you'll find that the name has been completed. Unfortunately, it doesn't speak the completed entry. Now, if you are sending to more than one contact at a time, make sure that Windows Live has the entire name by using your tab key. Live separates the entries with semicolons. Until you become comfortable with the way this program works, take your time. ADDING NEW CONTACTS: This is very important. Windows Live will not add a contact to the list automatically until you have e-mailed that person or group at least three times. if you want to add a contact yourself, follow the steps below. 1. press Shift Control C for the Contact list. 2. Press Shift Control C again to add a new contact. Just follow the steps by tabbing through, adding first name, last name, e-mail address and so on. Eventually, you will come to an Okay button and the new contact will be saved. it will automatically be placed in the list in alphabetical order. ADDING NEW FOLDERS: Be careful about this function or you might end up with folders which are actually enclosed within another folder. Microsoft calls them sub-folders. One of the most direct methods is to open the folder list with Control Y. Then arrow up until you hear your own name. if you shift tab once, you will land on a New Folder option. press Enter or Alt N and the window will open. In that way, the new folder is in the primary list. To protect yourself against problems, be sure that all other folders are closed. To close a folder, highlight it, or move to it with Jaws, then press the left arrow. You will hear a confirmation message spoken. MULTIPLE E-MAIL IDENTITIES: Yes, this is possible with Windows Live mail as well. You can add a new e-mail identity in the Accounts option found under Tools. Be careful when you do that obviously. Once your new identity has been added, you will find it in a rather unique way. You don't "switch identities" as you did with Outlook Express. Just open the Folder list by using the Control Y command. You will find all of the system folders followed by any you have added yourself. As you arrow down, you will come to a legend indicating the second identity and it too will be followed by a list of folders which were created by the system. You can add additional folders as is indicated above. The new folders will appear in the list which is dedicated to that particular identity. if you send an e-mail while focused on that second identity, the message will be sent with that second identity as the sender. I found that out the hard way when I sent a message about Windows Live Mail to this list but using my wife's identity. Naturally, the message was rejected and I received a note of explanation from David who knew immediately what had happened. Duh! SHARED CONTACT LIST: One odd thing is that the Contact list is shared by all identities. There doesn't seem to be a way to isolate contacts for a particular e-mail identity. I hope these notes help someone. I am finally enjoying using Windows Live Mail for the first time.
