From what I remember in using a scanner the lock position stops you from being able to plug in either the power cord or the USB cable to the scanner. You could only plug in the cord when it was unlocked.

  Hi Pedro,
On my scanner, Canon Lid a60, I have a switch on the down side of the scanner, esactly under the side of the lit that is turned towards you. The switch can be moved one centimeter left or right, and those are the locked/unlocked positions. Maybe a similar think exists on the scanner of your friend, so try checking it.
  Best regards!

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Releasing lock switch from USB cable

Hello all. My friend uses a scanner which plugs in to a USB port.
Recently, when trying to scan a document, she got a message saying she had to release the lock switch from USB cable.
My question is: where is this switch and how does she unlock it.
Any help is appreciated.
Pete
