you need to activate the sleep mode,  i think.
while being in the game window, press insert plus six and press enter to accept the new JCF file name. then press alt plus s for set options menu, and then choose advanced options. from the dialogue box, check "sleep mode enable" check box, and then check "sleep mode unload synthesizer" check box. then tab to ok and press enter on it, then press control plus s to save the settings. now, whenever you enter this program or game, jaws will unload itself, and once you get out of it, jaws will run again.

to silence jaws: jaws key+space bar, you'll then hear a tone and at that
point press s.
jaws will then announce speech off.
repeat the above steps to turn speech on again.
this works with jaws 11.
