Hi Heather;

Below is an email posted to the list addressing your question.

In response to the person having a dilemma using Internet explorer 8 with
her earlier version of Jaws, here is something I wrote up for someone else,
and thought it could be used in this instance.

*Please read the below document in it's entirety before performing any part
of this tutorial. This is done to help you know what will be happening with
your computer during the processes detailed below.

Once you have completed the steps, Windows Internet Explorer 8 will have
been uninstalled, and your computer will re-install Internet Explorer 7 by
default and on it's own, which worked much better with earlier versions of
Jaws, prior to version 10.

Make sure to follow these steps to the letter, and keep referring back to
this document when needed.

Do the following to uninstall Internet Explorer 8.

1. activate the start menu with the start menu key to the right of the
control key on the left hand side of the keyboard , or press the keystroke
of control+escape.

2. press the letter "S" until you get to settings and press enter to
activate the sub-menu.

If you do not hear settings, and hear control panel instead, then just press
the enter key to go into the control panel. The first thing you should hear
Jaws say is "Accessibility Options:. If you do not hear this, then press
the enter key until you do. If you do hear Jaws say this, then continue to
the next step.

3. press the letter "A" until you hear Jaws say "Add or Remove Programs" and
press enter. Once you press enter, a dialog box will pop up, and Jaws will
focus on the "Change and Remove Programs button". At this point, you should
wait for the program list to load, which could take a few minutes depending
on your computer.

4. I believe that earlier versions of Jaws, from 9 and down, still read the
program list as not selected, and if that's the case, disregard the not
selected part, and arrow down the list to Windows Internet Explorer 8.

5. tab until you hear Jaws say, "Windows Internet Explorer 8 Remove Button"
and press enter to start the uninstallation process.

6. Once you press enter, a dialog box will pop up. Just follow the
instructions to remove Internet Explorer 8. I do believe that all this will
involve is pressing the spacebar on a number of "next" buttons until the
removal process is finished. When it is done, it may ask you to re-start
your computer, if it does, follow the instructions for re-starting your
computer and skip to step 8.

7. After the uninstallation of Internet Explorer 8 is finished, and the
program has not asked you to re-start your computer, re--start your computer
the conventional way by going to the start menu, arrowing up to the shut
down option, and pressing enter. In the resulting dialog box, arrow to the
re-start option, and press enter.

8. Once your computer re-starts, you will have to be vigilant with your
updates from now on.

The next time you go to perform a Windows or Microsoft Update, you will find
that one of the updates is Windows Internet Explorer 8. This update should
be disabled, and hidden away so that it never shows up until you upgrade
your version of Jaws, or you want it to, which ever comes first.

If you are doing this from, either the Windows Update website, or the
Microsoft Update website, proceed with the following steps.

9. Go back into your start menu, and press the down arrow until you hear
Microsoft Update, or Windows Update, and press enter. An Internet explorer
window will open up, and you'll be taken to the Microsoft update or Windows
Update website, depending on which you pressed enter on above. Wait until
the page loads, you may hear a number of clicks in the meantime, which are
the various components and active X components initializing, and find the
custom button and press the spacebar or enter.

10. Wait until the site finishes it's search for the updates your computer
requires, at which point, you should see one update available, now whether
this update will be found in the high-priority updates, or the software
optional updates I do not know, but where ever it is press enter on that
link, at which point, the main section of the page will change. Press
insert+escape to refresh the Page buffer so that Jaws sees the new
information on the page. This last keystroke is not generally required, but
I feel it is better to be safe than sorry later on.

11. Arrow down to the main section of the page, or simply press the letter
"F" to get to the first forms element the page, which should be a checkbox.
If that box is checked, press the spacebar to uncheck it, if it is not
checked, just do nothing and proceed to the next step.

12. arrow past the title and description, if applicable, of the update, and
look for the checkbox just after it. Make sure that checkbox is checked.
Jaws may read what that checkbox is for, but if it doesn't, that checkbox is
to hide the update and to never show it to you again.

If you do not see this checkbox there, you may have to press enter on the
collapse link just after the title of the update in order to open the
description. Go ahead and do that, and you may or may not hear Jaws notify
you that the page has changed, so, better to be safe than sorry, and press
insert+escape to refresh the buffer again. Now if you arrow down, you will
find a longer description, and the new checkbox, so make sure it's checked.

13. Once the checkbox is checked, arrow up to the link titled, "review and
install updates" or something to that affect and press enter. You should
find the resulting screen empty. If this is the case, great, if it is not,
then see the next section on how to accomplish the above steps using the
Windows Automatic Update Wizard in your system tray.

If you feel this is too complicated for you, then you may find that
performing the above steps using the Windows Automatic Update wizard in your
system tray easier to accomplish, so follow the steps below in order to do
this.

*A note of warning though. The below steps are being written down from
memory, and so may not be exactly as shown, however the main principle is
the same, and the steps may be variable.

1. press insert+F11 to go to your system tray contents.

2. arrow up or down to the icon titled, "Updates are ready for your
computer, click here to download the updates". This is assuming that this
setting has not been changed to download and install updates automatically,
and if it is, you may look forward to getting to know this tutorial in a
great deal of detail, as you may be performing the steps over and over again
until this setting is changed.

3. tab to the left double click button, and press the spacebar.

Wait a few seconds and a dialog box will open up detailing the updates that
are ready to be downloaded or installed. One of those updates, possibly the
only update showing is Windows Internet Explorer 8.

4. Press the spacebar to uncheck the update, or, if no checkbox exists, tab
to the details button, and press the spacebar, at which point another dialog
box will pop up, and information on the update will be shown. If you tab
around, you will find a checkbox that is labeled as Don't show me this
update again. make sure it's checked, then tab to the ok button and press
the spacebar.

The update should now be gone from the list of updates.

At this point, you are finished, but be vigilant in the future when updating
your computer, as Windows Internet Explorer 8 has a way of creeping up on
you without warning, and even though you told it to not show you that update
again, it may forget that, and show up anyway, so if it does, it's a good
idea to keep this tutorial around for future use.

Good luck, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to write.

Scorpio
