Hi Ishe;

You are right. This problem started when we removed the disk from the drive
and didn't even think about that being a problem. We thought the program
had been installed and simply forgot to remove the program from the drive.
Upon putting the program back into the drive the program works fine. Thank
you very much for the excellent advice. Take care.
Mike

Hi Mike,

That error (I/OError) is often generated by programs that reference their
data from a removable disk or a CD. For example, Theophilos Bible Software,
Encyclopedia apps and of course Random House Unabridged dictionary.
>From what I know of this dictionary, it may require some pronounciation
files for linking to some words in the dictionary so it will fail to get
those.
Traditionally, this dictionary could be run off a CD, so its default
configuration would support inputting from a CD.
Now Windows will raise this error because Random House is trying to read
from where it is not supposed to reference.

To solve this problem, you should try checking where Random House is
looking for its data. This often fixes this problem.
However, in the event that RH is trying to read data as soon as you open it,
this may not be possible since this error will cause the program to abort.
Then the solution would be to reinstall the program, but during the
installation you have to pay particular attention to any options presented.
Some default options may not necessarily reflect your system configurations
as such.
For instance, consider choosing "Install to computer" as your initial option
since Random House would copy all its files to your hard drive and not make
assumptions that you would pop in a disk each time you want to use it.

I don't know if this helps, but I trust this just gives a hint.

Ishe

We all have the right to be wrong in our opinions but not in our facts.
