Freeware: the software is completely free, as in free beer. NVDA is an example of freeware. Shareware: The developers make the software freely available to download, but you are not free to use it without paying a registration fee. Instead they make it available free to try for a number of days, uses, or whatever, to encourage the user to buy the program. GoldWave is an example of shareware. Firmware however is completely different. It is software built into a device. The software is part of an operating system that is also built into a device. A smartphone is an example of a device containing firmware.
