I always have a login password for my Windows 7 accounts. However, they are very simple. I did it more for network sharing reasons. Not sure this is as necessary as it used to be because of the Home Group stuff.

For security of stolen laptops, both Windows and Mac, I am now using a different approach. I install Prey Open Source software which can sound alarms, take snapshots from the webcam, track file activity, or just lock all users out. When your laptop has been stolen, you go to their website and report the laptop or device stolen. It then activates the desired responses!

It makes me curious about the security of the people behind the website. However, it is Open Source software and it was recommended by LifeHacker, which usually considers thatt kind of thing!

There is just so much stuff in the world that, to me, is devoid of any real substance, value, and content that I just try to make sure that I am working on things that matter.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Improving the security of my computers

Hello all.
I will be moving to a property very soon. I am thinking on the software side to secure my laptop so that a quick thief can't just log onto my desktop, for example. I have seen with server operating systems that you are required to press ctrl+alt+delete before you can log in, even though your account(s) may not be password protected. I see Windows 7 offers this capability but it is off by default.
Do you think this is a good idea?
All thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.
