Those terms are not in the same category, so I do not think that is exactly the conversion you arre looking for. PAL is the European standard for broadcasting old style standard TV signals. In the US, there is a completely different standard, NTSC. This is why European TV equipment, like a VCR, is not useable in the US, and the other way around. I am sure the new High Definition standards are just as incompatible.

AVI is a compression / wrapper format for video. I believe the original TV format, like PAL or NTSC, is independent from the format like AVI used to package it into one file and compress it so it is much smaller. It is not, however, the most compatible or best performing format anymore. The most favored format at this point, by a large margin is called h264.

In other words, you may need to convert the format from PAL to NTSC, depending on your location and TV equipment, then convert it from the current container / compression format to your desired format. There are many programs to perform these conversions, like handbreak at handbrake.fr. The program you mentioned can probably do this as well, as long as you know what options to set for the conversion. I hope this helps you set them correctly.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Converting pal to avi, is it possible and if so,how?

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this list and have just been reading and getting a feel for the
list before asking my question. I hope it will not be considered off topic
or unsuitable for here. I'm totally blind and am using Windows 7 Home
Premium with JAWS 12 Professional. I have some movies that are in pal format
and I'm wanting to convert them to avi so they'll be smaller. Does anyone
know of an accessible program that might do this? I used to use Magic DVD
Ripper and I thought it would do this, but I can't find the right setting if
it does, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and have a great
day.
Lisa, P Briones
