Hi Wayne; I run Office 2002 but, 2003 & 2002 have a lot of similarities. There are 3 different ways below. Try the steps below & see which one works best for you.
Step 1.; Open the tools menu with alt T and press ENTER on "autocorrect". Press CTRL-TAB to access the "autoformat as you type" tab. Arrow down and uncheck "automatic bulleted lists" and "automatic numbered lists". Enter on okay. You can also hit the backspace at the beginning of the line it auto numbered or auto lettered to remove it and temporarily turn off automatic number and lettering. Step 2.; Go to the Format menu by pressing the Alt key then right arrow to format or by pressing applications key and arrow down to Bullets and Numbering; hit enter. Control tab till you hear "Numbered" and then tab once and choose "None." Tab to Apply and OK. Step 3.; To get rid of bullets and numbers, do alt. O for Format and arrow twice to bullets and numbers. Hit enter and select None and tab to OK. Hope 1 of these helped. Take care. I use the enter Key. But, it turns it off after I hit it twice. I don't want it on at all for the moment. I am typing some documents. I am using Jaws 11 latest version and Windows Vista with Microsoft Word 2003. Wayne Scott "A merry heart does good like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones."
