I do not use any of these services anymore. I now use the fax feature of my
betwork printer. I used one of these services several years ago. I had not
seen any that are free recently.
Typically, these free on-line fax services have a limit of outgoing faxes
before they charge any fees. There big sell is to provide an incoming fax
service where people send you a fax by calling their fax number associated
with your account. They automatically email you with an image of the fax
attached or a link to their website to view the fax image. This is an
attractive way to handle incoming faxes if necessary. The trick here is to
find a service to perform OCR on the image to provide readable text or
perform OCR on your computer.
I just submitted a new free OCR package for Vinux this morning, which now
handles all image types, including PDF and Postscript.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Free Internet Fax Service
Hi gang. Has anyone used one of the free Internet fax services like
Myfax.com/free to send faxes over the Internet? I recently received a
form that had to be filled out and signed and was thinking of scanning it
with Open Book, saving it as a .tif file, and sending it to the recipient
using the free Myfax.com service. will this work, or is this one of
those too good to be true deals? This seems like a good option for
occasional faxing. It seems to have a very simple interface and would
sure beat buying and installing a fax modem especially since I need to
send faxes only once in a great while. Thanks for any feedback.
Gerald
