I think I know what's tgoing on.  Most external hard drives have built in
software which comes up immediately when you access the drive. It could be something as simple as a list of options or a password portal where you have to enter a certain string of characters to be allowed into the inner sanctum
so to speak.
You can select a simple program like Notepad  or Wordpad  and allow the
program to make that kind of association. The worst that could happen would
be that  the displayed data couldn't be read.
I believe, although I can't think how right now, that you can go into the
Applications menu and reassociate certain files to be read by another
program.  I had to do that with some programs that were coming up in
Microsoft Word Viewer instead of in Word itself.

Hello Listers,
I did a complete reinstall of my windos XP Pro on my del inspiron 1525
laptop.  Thinking that this would solve some of my issues.  I am having
trouble accessing my external HD. Every time I try to access it I get the
following.
D:\ This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action.  Create an association in the folder options control panel okay
button.  I am using jaws 9.  Can some one please help?
