Uninstall Windows Live Essentials 2011 / Windows Live Messenger 2011.
Download and install Windows Live Messenger 2009 from here:

Thing is  got comfortable using Messenger to IM and that was the only thing 
in that "Essentials", package which I used and now that doesn't work and 
lots of other garbage lumped on this PC which I am never likely to use...

Well if nowt else getting used to uninstalling programmes...
