I think your best bet is to convert those DRM-protected WMA files to a
friendlier file type and use a Rockboxed Sansa Clip which does have
variable speed control with pitch correction.

I'm wondering if there are commercial MP3 players out there that will play

can read audio books faster than normal.

I've seen some players like the Sansa Clip that will play protected WMA
files but they only offer one level of speed increase.  What I'm really
looking for is a player that will enable me to change the speed by a number
of increments.  Ideally it would also have pitch correction built in.

I do have a Bookport Plus and really love it, but it does not play protected
WMA files.

Thanks.
