No, definitely not in safe mode. To enter safe mode, you have to conciously
press F8 repeatedly at just the right time during the boot up procedure,
which requires sighted help.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Sudden Loss of Sound
Hi listers. My Dell workstation running XP Pro and JAWS 9 was working
fine last evening, and I stepped away to have my dinner. When I returned
to the computer, I had lost all sound including JAWS and Windows sounds.
Since I wasn't working on the computer at the time, I could not
understand why I would suddenly lose all sound for nlo apparent reason.
I shut down and then rebooted using the power button, but still no sound.
Finally, I had a sighted neighbor watch the monitor to see what was going
on. He said that after I rebooted , a message appeared onscreen that
said something like press F1 to continue. So he pressed F1, and the
computer proceeded to start up with the Windows log on jingle and
finally, the "JAWS is ready" announcement and everything was apparently
restored to normal. This has happened a couple of times before. What
could cause such a sudden loss of all sound? Thanks for any feedback.
Gerald
