IMPORTANT NOTES: These settings are not global. They pertain to each folder in your system, individually. The Outlook 2010 system will remember where you were if you return to it immediately after making changes. If you get lost, close Outlook 2010 entirely and then return to it. Be very careful with these settings and make sure that what you have chosen is correct. There are several safeguards built into the system. When exiting after a change, several Okay buttons have to be pressed before the changes become permanent. HIDING READ MESSAGES IN OUTLOOK 2010 1. Press Alt V to access the View tab. The Alt key can also be used, after which you can tab to the View option. 2. Look for Current View and press Enter. 3. Under Current View, look for View Settings and press Enter. 4. Tab until you hear "Description Filter" and press Enter. 5. This new display is in a multiple page format, accessible by using Control Tab. 6. Control Tab and listen for the page entitled "More Choices". 7. Tab and listen for the option "Only Items That Are" AND PRESS THE SPACEBAR TO INSERT A CHECK IN THE BOX. 8. Tab through the next display and press Enter on the Okay button, again. This will happen several times before you finally exit the View menu. Be sure to press Enter on all of those Okay buttons. 11. Your system will return to displaying the messages but this time, only the unread messages will be shown. 12. To restore the system to normal view, repeat steps 1 through 6 but in Step 7, remove the check box. CAVEAT: The View Menu will recall where you were last, at least where the primary choice was made. If you simply press the Alt key, in most cases, the focus returns to the View tab or to whatever option you last used.
