With all due respect to Larry, that is not necessarily so. Here in the US, we call those portable storage devices, "thumb drives" because they look superficially like a thumb. On the other hand, there are flash cards, produced very cheaply, which are not rewritable. The material is burned onto them but cannot be removed or changed. They are rare but some major distributors like on line newspapers, use them because they can produce thousands of them with relatively low cost. The average cost of a thumb drive or thumb stick, runs anywhere from $5 USD to about $20 USD, depending on the memory capacity. Flash cards, on the other hand, can cost commercially as little as $1 USD or less. With a massive copy device, as many as 100 flash cards can be burned simultaneously. Once they are used, they can be thrown away with little impact to the environment or, more importantly, to the projected cost absorbed by the on line media producer. I believe that these flash cards will become more and more prevalent as time passes.
