Hi Chris,

Here's a thought. How about instead of putting something into the
replacement word field, assign a sound to the 8203 character. Assign a
sound that you can only hear if the volume is turned way up. I haven't
tried this but, it wouldn't hurt to give it a whirl. Hope this helps. Take
care.
Mike

Unicode characters?

Hi. That's how I did it. If I recall, I held down the alt key when I
typed
out 8203 and it created that character. I then copied it to the JAWS
dictionary. But it wants me to put something in the edit field to replace
it, and I used the space bar. Unfortunately, then when JAWS reads a line
with that character in it, since this character appears in the middle of
words, it breaks up the word. For example:

"Hi, how is ever yone doing? Unfortunate y my comp uter has issues."

If I could just get JAWS to ignore that Unicode character all together and
just read as if it wasn't there. But at least it's better than it was.
Some sentences I still can't understand, but others I can figure out what
it
  is supposed to say. Thanks.

  Hi Chris,

I was able to make what you are wanting to do work in Outlook Express &
Word. Below are the steps I used to do it. I did use the default
dictionary manager instead of 1 of the application dictionary managers.
  1. I created the "
? " & copied it to the clipboard.
  2. Pressed Insert / Jaws key + D, for the the application dictionary
manager, & then pressed control, shift, + D, for the default dictionary
  manager.
  3. Tabbed to the Add button, pressed spacebar to open the Actual Word edit
field, pressed the back space key a few times to make sure this edit field
  was empty, pasted the, "
  ? " character.
  4. Tabbed to the Replacement Word edit field, pressed the spacebar 1 time,
tabbed to the okay button & pressed enter.
  5. Invoke the control + S keystroke to save, & Alt + F4 to close.

  This is how I created the " ? ."

I turned the numlock off, held the alt key down, pressed 8, 2, 0, 3, let
up
on the alt key, & there was the " ? ". I then copied it & went from
there.
If you are creating 8203 symbol differently please let me know & I'll try
to

duplicate what you're doing. The " ? " is what I get when invoking the
Alt
  + 8203 keystroke and I'm curious if you're getting a different symbol.
Take

  care.
  Mike

Hi. Turns out I was able to create the Unicode character 8203 in Word.
I
then was able to copy it and put it into the JAWS dictionary.

However, I'm stuck once again. It requires I put something in the edit
field for it to be spoken as. But to just use the spacebar doesn't work
because then it splits up the voicing of words since this Unicode
  character
randomly appears in the middle of words on Facebook.

What I'm trying to do is have JAWS totally ignore character 8203 as if
it
wasn't on the screen at all. But if I have to put something, even a
  space,
in the field for how I want it to be spoken, it's still speaking
incorrectly. Not sure what to try next.

If I can just figure out a way to have JAWS ignore this character, then
my
Facebook struggles will be over, at least in this particular case.

    Hi Chris,

If you can't copy the character there will be no way to put an entry
into
the dictionary manager for it. I made a mistake when I said the ASCII
character 8203 was a, mail symbol. I used the word mail, spelled,M, A,
I,
  L.

    It is actually supposed to be, M, A, L, E, as in a man's symbol. I did
an
ASCII character 8204, & it is a female symbol. I have no idea what or
how
Facebook works since I am not involved with any Social Networking
groups.
  I

do certainly hope that you can get the problem resolved but, from the
way
  it

looks the dictionary manager won't be of any help. Take care.

HI. When I read current line, what it says Is question mark, or
  sometimes
it acts like a question mark and makes the word sound like it's asking
a
      question.

But if I put the cursor on this character, it says absolutely nothing.
    Not
even blank. It's completely silent. But if I hit the current
character
    key
three times, it tells me that it's ASCKI character 8 2 zero 3.

I tried to copy this character, but it just says "nothing selected".
  So,
    as
far as I can tell, I can't have the JAWS dictionary ignore these
strange
Unicode characters, if that's what they are. I'm really confused on
  what
      this even is.

I can barely read statuses on the mobile site of Facebook anymore
since
  so
many of these characters are appearing in the posts. It's maddening.

      Hi Chris,

When I typed the ASCII 8203 into a new blank email it read as, " mail
    symbol

." Is that what you hearing when Jaws is reading. I ask this because
  in
your example you used, question mark. So, is Jaws saying, mail symbol
  or
question mark? If you can type the ASCII symbol, you can then copy
the
symbol, paste it into the Jaws dictionary manager actual word field,
  then
    in

the replacement word field put a space with the spacebar. At least it
  is
worth a try. If it doesn't work you can go into the dictionary
manager
    and
      delete the entry.

Hope this works for you. Take care.
      Mike

Hi. Is it possible to enter the ASCKI character 8 2 zero 3 in the
  JAWS
dictionary somehow? There's this strange character that began
  appearing
      in
much of the posts all over Facebook, and it only seems to be read
    allowed
      by
screen-readers, not visually seen. It disrupts the flow of the
    sentences,
        sounding something like this:

HI, How is everbod question mark y doing? I' question mark m doing
  fine.

It's awful. Since I doubt Facebook will fix whatever they broke
last
      week,
especially since they can't see it on the screen, I thought I'd try
to
      take
matters into my own hands and see if I can force JAWS to ignore this
      strange
character so JAWS will read each sentence properly like before.

So, if it's possible, how do I enter this ASCKI character 8 2 zero 3
  in
      the
        JAWS dictionary edit field? Thanks.
