I hope the mods don't mind this post in order to help others to use Ninite & keep their pc running smoothly.
If anyone feels they can improve on what I've written then feel free to change & repost to the list Go to http://ninite.com and install the following programs. ONLY CHECK THE BOXES MARKED WITH "CHECK" BEFORE THEM LEAVE ALL THE OTHER BOXES UNCHECKED. MEDIA iTunes Songbird Hulu CHECK VLC KMPlayer AIMP foobar2000 Winamp Audacity CHECK K-Lite Codecs GOM Spotify CCCP MediaMonkey QuickTime RUNTIMES CHECK Flash CHECK Flash (IE) CHECK Java CHECK .NET CHECK Silverlight Air CHECK Shockwave IMAGING Paint.NET Picasa GIMP IrfanView XnView Inkscape FastStone DOCUMENTS Office OpenOffice CHECK Reader SumatraPDF Foxit Reader CutePDF LibreOffice PDFCreator SECURITY CHECK Essentials Avast AVG CHECK Malwarebytes Ad-Aware Spybot Super FILE SHARING uTorrent eMule OTHER Dropbox Evernote Google Earth Steam KeePass Everything Mozy UTILITIES TeamViewer ImgBurn CHECK CCleaner Auslogics Defraggler RealVNC TeraCopy CDBurnerXP CHECK Recuva TrueCrypt Revo Launchy Glary Speccy InfraRecorder COMPRESSION CHECK 7-Zip WinRAR DEVELOPER TOOLS Python FileZilla Notepad++ JDK WinSCP PuTTY Eclipse If using Jaws and it says wrapping to top then press b for button and press enter Pull up a list of links (insert + F7) and find the download installer link and press enter You will be prompted to run or save the installer so save it as you will need to do this once a month Once saved you can now open the installer The windows security dialogue should come up - tab to run A window will come up to show ninite is preparing to install and if you tab around you should find a show details link press enter on this Tab until you hear list view and use your arrows - ininitally you will be at the top of the list move up and down to get the progress of each Program that is being installed When the last line reads OK then tab to the close button Once you have installed all the programs restart your pc. You need to run the installer once a month from wherever you have saved the file. On restart make sure you are running no programs as you are about to perform some system maintenance. Go through the icons on your desktop and only leave icons for programs you will actually use and make sure you leave Ccleaner and Auslogics Disk defrag on the desktop as you will use these 2 at least once a month if not weekly. Ccleaner (all have the letter c after the number so you know I am referring to Ccleaner) 1c Find ccleaner and press enter 2c Press Alt + G to take you to the registry cleaner 3c Press Alt + S to scan for problems 4c Press Alt + F to fix problems 5c if more than one problem tab to fix all issues and if only one problem tab to fix issue 6c Tab to close or if only one problem you will need to do Alt + Space + C to close the dialogue Repeat 1c to 6c until there are no problems 7c Press alt + T to go to Tools 8c Tab to Startup button and press spacebar 9c Tab 3 times until you are in the list of programs 10c You now need to go through the list and identify all the programs you recognise and stop all the programs not needed from starting up when your pc starts - If you are not sure ask and give the full details of what the line says so others can help you identify the program correctly (you can do this on any line - press the application key and press enter on Save to text file - it will be given the name startup.txt - note the location then open the file) 11c for example probable programs would be Yes HKLM:Run JAWS "C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\12.0\jfw.exe" /run Yes HKLM:Run MSC "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\msseces.exe" - hide -runkey Yes HKLM:Run SunJavaUpdateSched "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Java \Java Update\jusched.exe" 12c in the example above the first 2 you would want as they are for Jaws & Microsoft Security Essentials, the 3rd Sun Java it is not needed at start up so on that listing press the application key and press enter on Disable 13c Once you have done all the above press Alt + C to go to cleaner 14c Press Alt + R to run the cleaner 15c You can now close the program Auslogics 1a Find Auslogics disk Defrag and press enter 2a tab to pnbutton defrag and press the down arrow 3a If this is the first time you have run this then down arrow to Defrag & Optimise (slower once weekly) 4a You need to leave your pc to allow the process to run without interruption else if you start running programs it would defeat what you are trying to do 5a Once the above has finished then you need to restart your pc and use your pc as normal. Ninite installer (which you should have saved) You need to run the ninite installer any time a program from the list you have installed reports that an update is available - the reason you don't' update from the program itself Is to stop any toolbars or unwanted software from being installed - the ninite installer will only check programs to see if updates are available - if there are no updates then the program will not be re-installed and only those with updates will be installed. Ccleaner It is up to you to decide how often you run this - monthly should be enough Auslogics Disk Defragmenter You need to run this once a week if you use a lot of programs and change a lot of files if not you can get away with running this monthly Any problems be sure to email the list and ask.
