The reason the iPhone audio including the ring, insists on playing through
the iPhone speaker is because the iPhone knows that the device is not a
combination microphone / audio device. The iPhone will ring on external
speaker always unless you are using a device that will allow you to answer
and talk over a headset.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Using a Mixer

Hello:
This is for those of you who are audio buffs.
For years, I have been trying to integrate all of my computer and audio
systems at work. Someone on this list suggested a mixer. So, I purchased
an 8 channel mixer board.
So far, it works pretty well; however, there are still a couple of problems.
I have a headset, and I like to use it to talk on the telephone, dictate to
my computer using Dragon Naturally Speaking, and communicate using my
iPhone.
I also like to have audio output switched among my telephone, my computer,
and my iPhone.
I like to switch the output between my headset and my external computer
speakers.
As I said, almost everything works perfectly, and I can switch output from
left ear to write ear and can simultaneously increase the volume of all
audio sources or selectively increase or decrease the volume from specific
audio sources.
The wiring to get all this working makes the Apollo spacecraft look like a
5th grade science project. Here are the remaining problems:

1st, if I play music from my iPhone, not an important activity, it is as if
one channel is missing. The sound comes out through both speakers, but
sometimes the vocal track is missing. In other words, I hear only the
instrumental part. If, however, the connection Jack is left barely
touching, I can hear both vocal and instrumental tracks. Clearly, there is
something wrong with the plug; however, I do not know whether the problem
is trying to use a stereo plug in a mono jack or the other way around.
the 2nd problem is even more baffling. As many of you know, there is only a
single plug in the iPhone; however, I ordered from Headset Buddy an adapter.
It works fine. With my standard headset plugged directly into the Headset
Buddy, when the phone rings, the caller ID is broadcast directly to the
headset.
If, however, I run the output through the mixer, the caller ID is announced
only through the iPhone speaker and neither on my headset nor through the
computer speakers.
This is very strange since what I am looking for works if I am plugged in to
the Headset Buddy directly. It is also strange because VoiceOver, the
screen reader that runs on the iPhone otherwise works great, the audio
coming in to either my headset or the PC speakers. It is just that, when
the phone rings, the audio, including the ring, insists on playing through
the iPhone speaker and not through the mixer to my headset or to the PC
speakers.
Any ideas?
