Hi everyone!
Just thought I would let you guys know about a little discovery I made
recently. While reading my novels and stuff I often use the jaws ResearchIt
utility to look up words through Wictionary as well as looking up stuff on
Wikipedia. After doing this many times per day, any little trick to make
this multistep process faster is very much appreciated as I don't like
having to look for the jaws key + space bar then letter r on my laptop.
I have now configured Jaws 13 to present me with the ResearchIt edit field
with one easy to find hotkey: control alt spacebar. I then press enter and
my word is quickly defined. I have not found any hotkey conflicts with other
applications on my laptop. So far so good. Here's what I did in case you
want to do this too.
I went into jaws keyboard manager: pressed Jaws key + 8 on the number row.
I will make this a default setting so I pressed control alt letter d.
I pressed tab key in this tree view to show all the jaws keyboard
assignments.
I typed the first few characters of the word "research" until I found the
first item associated with ResearchIt.
I down arrowed to the second item which has the key assignment of jaws key +
spacebar + letter r for common use.
I pressed control + letter a.
I pressed my desired new hotkey of control alt spacebar.
I turned on the jaws cursor to read the page and assure all was correct on
this dialogue.
I then tabbed to Ok and pressed enter.
I accepted the warning message.
After a few seconds I was returned to the keyboard manager.
I pressed alt F4 to close the keyboard manager.
I pressed my new control alt spacebar hotkey to test it.
ResearchIt came right up asking me to type my query. I typed the word Jaws
and pressed enter (I have ResearchIt configured with Wictionary as default
search).
This works beautifully and reliably. For those who want to launch ResearchIt
very quickly and easily, you will enjoy using this method of assigning a new
jaws hotkey to launch ResearchIt.
A similar process also works if you want to change the Pause/Break key on
your desktop or laptop keyboard to become the jaws say time key. Pressing
jaws key + F12 is much slower and annoying than simply pressing the single
Pause/break key. :-)
