You do not have to turn RSS on. Go to a website where there is a RSS feed you want to join. Enter on the RSS button or whatever it actually is and you'll just follow the instructions. It will put your RSS up above your e-mail account and for me, if you move the arrow over it, a post will switch to Read status and go away. So, just know that in advance. It works like a regular folder in your e-mail account at that point. I hope this helps. If not, ask more questions.
