Hi there,

I am new to this list,
- almost blind,
- using Jaws since 1996,
- interested, among many other things, in the application of the Python programming language to scientific problems
- a seasoned C++ programmer using MSVS and MinGW
- interested in music and audio manipulation
- working on WinXP and Win7 64bit

For a few years I have been using iPython (http://ipython.org), a feature-rich interactive Python shell with various front ends especially well-suited for scientific computing such as statistics and data analysis.

I have mainly used iPython's text front end in the command prompt window. Jaws access to the command prompt is somewhat limited, and I am unaware of any alternatives.

iPython comes with more sophisticated front-ends capable of combining text and graphics. One is based on Qt, another, called notebook, is web-based.

Although Qt can be made accessible in theory, I've decided to try the notebook - with disappointing results: iPython's web-server generates very modern HTML requiring the latest versions of FireFox of Safari. Even IE9 is not good enough. I believe the main stumbling-block are so-called "flexible boxes", a beefed-up variant of edit boxes. Jaws does not allow me to edit text in these boxes. While I can enter forms mode by pressing enter, and write the first line, Jaws leaves the forms note upon the next pressing of enter.

I know this behavior from my GMail account when I write e-mails online on Win7 64bit and IE9. My only work-around is to write the e-mail text elswhere and paste it into GMail's text box. While the GMail thing seems to be a bug of Jaws, the very similar behavior in iPython's web-interface may have a different cause.

Any hint on how to efficiently work woth iPython and Jaws would be appreciated.

On a separate note, I am at a loss when thinking of the best way to share such experiences with FreedomScientific's developers. Clearly it would be useless to send an e-mail to my local Jaws dealer. I am allergic to such hierarchies. I want to talk to the people directly or post a bug report on some public bug tracker as encouraged by thousands of open source software projects. So I wonder if this list is the right place to get in touch with FS staff.

Regards

Leo
