Hi Kerryn,
I haven't used Skype for a long time, but I seem to remember that if you tab
several times from your contact list, there is a button you can activate
that will cause Skype to connect. I used the space bar to click the button.
I don't remember the label for the button, but I think you will know it when
you hear it. It may prompt you for your password.
Sorry for the vagueness here, but I hoe this will help.

Go to the Skype menu, then "online status" submenu and check whatever else
status you'd like; it was probably set to offline, which makes all
contacts
display as offline even if they really aren't.
