I have tried repeatedly to use JAWS with Google Docs with no success, and I've
talked to the three leading screen reader makers in the U.S. None has anything
good to say about Google Docs.
Google has its own sort of screen reader called ChromeVox, which I have
installed. I actually used it to read a document in Google Docs, which was
more than I was ever able to do before. Still, ChromeVox is, in my opinion,
not ready for prime time. For one thing, the so-called ChromeVox key doesn't
work. For Windows machines, it is control plus alt. Even worse, on my laptop,
control plus alt plus arrow keys flips the screen display around. So, my
sighted colleagues will ask, "Why is your screen upside down?"
There is a sort of work-around. By pressing control plus z, it is as if the
ChromeVox keys were depressed such that control plus z followed by the period,
for example, gives a list of ChromeVox commands.
I noticed from the Chrome Website that a new set of scripts has been released
that allegedly makes JAWS and ChromeVox work together. I've tried ChromeVox
both with and without JAWS loaded, and quite frankly, I had better luck with
JAWS loaded.
Just wondering whether anyone here has had any real success in using Google
Docs with ChromeVox.
Note, I would have no interest in ChromeVox but for Google Docs, and I would
have no interest in Google Docs, but for a client who insists on using it.
