I use audacity for basics, but there are a few guys who use it quite a lot
more, and there's also a blind audacity users group, and it's free - here's
the blind-computing page for it:
http://www.blind-computing.com/audio/pages/audacity.html
Here's a link to the jaws users guide to using audacity 2.0 - sort of
currently recommended version:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-2.0-Guide.html
And, think that guide also applies to use with screen readers other than
jaws.
The audacity4blind mailing list can be found here:
http://www.freelists.org/list/audacity4blind
And, the home/download page on sourceForge for like the latest version, 2.0
is here:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Stay well
