Quick step by step
open a blank worksheet
type 1 2 3 4 5 in first 5 cells of the first column.
Place focus on the cell beneath 5.
Press Alt + = then press enter.
Your answer will be 6.

This works vertically and horizontally.

try, pressing, alt key and the equals key, and accept the default of cells
within a column, (A:1-C:1) this is just an example, put your cursor in the
last cell below last number of the column, then press the alt equal key and
enter on the coordiances given, Excel knows what your wanting to do, your
added column will be in the box where your cursor is, and will state as a
formula..
