HI, Yes, a lister (I'm sorry I forgot your name) posted this last night. He conveyed that after having selected the cells of interest, one can press the jaws command to read the bottom line of the active window (insert + pageDown). This command will tell you how many cells have been selected, their sum, average, and other info.
If you mean, compute and average, that I don't think can be done without using a formula.
