Hello everyone,
I agree with David that it would not be a good idea to turn off message compacting, if that is even possible. However, you should back up your outlook express folder before clicking OK to compact. Five years ago after clicking OK for compacting, my wife's computer crashed during the compacting process, and when she rebooted and open outlook express, all her email folders were still present, but they were empty and all her email messages were gone. Since that time, I back up our outlook express folders before compacting. Happily the problem has never occurred again. But if the compacting operation is interrupted, the result is very costly. The outlook express folder is buried deep inside many layers of subfolders, but once you locate it, you can save the location as a favorite so you can easily locate it in the future to back it up. You can also relocate the outlook express folder to a different location, so that it is easy to find and back up. This is a good practice apart from the compacting problem, since system discs do crash.

It is on by default and so far as I know you can't turn it off and to be
honest if you can I do not recommend it.

To do it manually hit alt + F and then the letter F twice in succession.
