Best, old-school way to make sure it's windows losing it's sound is to hit
left shift key 5 times in quick succession - launches sticky keys popup, and
makes a sort of beep sound.
That might just let you know if it's windows losing it's sound output, or
just accessibility software clamming up as such.
If you hear the sound there, then you could try launching narrator - windows
key + U, wait a couple of seconds, and hit alt + N.
