I'm familiar with virtualization. The problem is that fixing the audio issues
requires more technical effort than I'm willing to
detail in a page on the archive.
It also requires a separate windows product key.

That's because you have to reduce the audio latency manually. It can
be done, but if you're gonna do virtualization you'd best have a
system with 4gb of ram at an absolute minimum, 8gb is preferred.
Ideally you want to give your virtual machine at least 3gb of ram for
optimal audio performance. If virtualizing xp x86, there's no point in
going above 3gb of ram because it can't take more than 3gb. Xp is
light enough that 3gb is more than enough for xp to perform optimally,
provided that your system is suited for such things, i e, you're not
using all of your system's ram for the virtual machine. To give you an
example of an ideal setup, I have a macbook pro2015 with a duel core
2.7ghz intel core i5, and 8gb of ram. Xp runs exceptionally well, and
windows 7 runs decently well, keeping in mind that I am running
virtual machines off an external hard drive. Which brings me to
another point. If you can afford an ssd, buy one. You will not regret
it. That will vastly increase your chances of being able to use your
virtual machines for gaming on your system.
