The sand batteries can be killed. Personally, I have most luck using guns on them, which means that you need to dodge some of their bullets. If you want more help, shoot me a mail off-list and I'll give you more details. If this is an issue that a lot of folks are having (those things were a pain for me, too) I'd be happy to throw together a quick recording and take out a couple.
