Hi, Thanks Jude, when ever I think of top down games, it always makes me think of an old 80s or 90s main stream game called gauntlet which I used to love playing. I'll check out the info you sent and maybe give nethack a go.

First, google man nethack and read what comes up. Next while in the game, remember typing (?) brings up help. rogue hack and nethack were the first top down view video games written. You look down through the ceiling of whatever level you play on at any given time. When ascii is enabled all ascii characters have meanings in that game. The official support for nethack is in usenet group rec.games.roguelike.nethack.
