Example, tarek trading post; first buy the donkey then try to buy the Jungle Machetti and see what happens. Another example try to buy the mountain pass map in the mountain pass visitors center/shop even with enough gold and the buy buttons are all grayed out. Last time I tried I ended up getting a side quest for the snook mine which I completed. I have however entered the battered knife and did recruit a deck hand. Earlier I was planning on buying the donkey and the machetti and going into tropical jungle and either buying some real estate or the trading post and seeing what I could do with the machetti to clean the place up. My guess is, such investments can have gold pieces added to one's account on a regular basis and that eventually would get me enough gold to buy the ship.
