Yes, you need to press enter on the square you want them to work at.
Press A to find out what workers will do when working at that square.

Once you're happy with your setup, you hit e to end the day.
This isn't a realtime simulation game, so you can't control how
productive the workers are or anything like that, it's more like a game
of luck and chance where you have a limited amount of control over the
probabilities. The more people at the fields, the more grain you are
likely to grow, but even that depends on the weather. The more people at
the tavern, the likelier you are to meet outsiders who can help. And the
list goes on.
