This is what I do when researching lore: I begin with the default guess, and I change one rune at a time until I get the correct combination. I pay attention to the number and colors of the markers to know when a particular rune is correct or not. A red marker means there is a correct rune in the correct position, and a white marker means there is a correct rune in the wrong position. My method is easier to demonstrate than to explain, so I will include an example of a game with my conclusions below. A A A A A, 1 red 0 white, there is 1 A A A A A B, 1 red 0 white, there are no B’s and rune 5 is not A A A A A C, 1 red 1 white, there is at least 1 C and rune 5 is not C A A A C C, 0 red 3 white, rune 4 is an A and there are at least 2 C’s A A C A C, 2 red 1 white, rune 3 is C A C C A C, 2 red 1 white, rune 2 and rune 5 are not C, so rune 1 must be C C C C A C, 3 red 0 white, I know runes 1, 3, and 4 are correct so I still need runes 2 and 5 C C C A D, 3 red 1 white, there is a D but it is not rune 5, so it must be rune 2 C D C A D, 4 red 0 white, I am only missing rune 5 C D C A E, 4 red 0 white, rune 5 is not E, so it must be F C D C A F, 5 red, success This game was for a lore chapter. I normally stop at lore pages for the purpose of unlocking journal entries, but lore chapters are necessary for getting lore tomes. If you equip your items and gems with the highest lore, you will get more guesses. This game used 11 guesses, which is much fewer than my available number of guesses. It could even have been done more efficiently because I used a few guesses just to confirm what I knew with logic. There are also lore quests that allow you to use gold and lore fragments for a chance to find higher tier lore items, but I have never tried one of them, so I’m not sure exactly how they work.
