You might check to find out  if the Hadley Institute still has a chess course.  
When I took the first class,  I got a wooden chess set for free!  I don't know 
if that's the kind you want, but it is clearly accessible.  All the parts are 
easy !identify "touch, and there is a peg at the bottom of each piece that fits 
into the hole in the middle of each alternating indented square, so you don't 
need to be as careful to keep them from being moved or knocked down.
